What makes a good password?

The Password
A private word or phrase that proves you’re really you when you log in, similar to a PIN at a bank.
Picture It
Think of a PIN at an ATM. Only you are supposed to know it, and entering it correctly proves the account is yours. A password works the same way for your online accounts — it proves you’re the one logging in, not someone else.
How It Works
- When you create an account (your personal profile on a website or service, such as email or online banking), you choose a password to go with it.
- Every time you log in — meaning you enter your username and password to open the account — you type that password to prove it’s really you.
- Longer passwords with a mix of letters and numbers are much harder for others to guess.
- Never share your password, the same way you wouldn’t share your bank PIN.
Never use the exact same password everywhere. If one place gets tricked out of it, someone could use it to open all your other doors too.
There Are No Dumb Questions
Why can’t I use my name as a password?
Because it’s too easy to guess, much like using “1234” as a bank PIN. Anyone close to you could figure it out.
Is it okay to write my password down?
Yes, if you keep the paper somewhere safe and private, like a locked drawer. That’s actually safer than picking something easy to guess.
