What does that little WiFi symbol actually mean?

The WiFi Symbol
A small icon (a small picture on your screen) that shows whether your computer is connected to the internet, and how strong that connection is.
Picture It
Think of the signal bars on a cell phone. More bars mean a stronger connection. The WiFi symbol works the same way — more curved lines lit up means a stronger connection to the internet.
How It Works
- Look near the clock on your screen for a small icon made of curved lines.
- All the curved lines lit up means a strong connection to your WiFi network (the wireless connection that links your devices to the internet).
- An exclamation mark or an X means something’s wrong — you’re not connected.
- Click the icon to see which network you’re using, or choose a different one.
If the WiFi symbol shows connected but websites still won’t load, the problem might be your internet provider, not your WiFi itself.
There Are No Dumb Questions
Why does WiFi sometimes disconnect on its own?
It usually means the signal got weak, or your router (the small device at home that creates your WiFi signal) restarted. Reconnecting from the WiFi menu often fixes it right away.
What if the symbol has a little X on it?
That means you’re not connected to any WiFi. Click it to choose a network.
