Folder vs. file — what’s the difference?

Plain-English explanations for everyday computer terms. No jargon, no assumptions.

The Folder / The File

A file is one single item, like one photo or document. A folder is a container that holds several files together.

Think of a filing cabinet. Each paper inside a folder is a file — one photo, one document, one letter. The folder itself doesn’t do anything on its own; it just keeps related files organized together, the same way it would in a physical filing cabinet.

  1. A file is one item: a photo, a document, a song.
  2. A folder holds files together so they don’t get scattered across the computer.
  3. You can put folders inside other folders too, just like a drawer in a filing cabinet can hold several folders.
  4. Double-click a folder to look inside it; double-click a file to open it.

Deleting a folder deletes everything inside it too, the same way emptying a drawer removes every folder in it.

There Are No Dumb Questions
Can I put anything I want inside a folder?
Yes. Folders can hold any mix of files: photos, documents, whatever you like.
How do I make a new folder?
Right-click (click using the right-hand mouse button) on empty space — or press and hold on a touchscreen — and look for “New Folder.”

Open any folder on your computer and count how many files or folders are inside it.
