Computer box vs. monitor — which one is really “the computer”?

Plain-English explanations for everyday computer terms. No jargon, no assumptions.

The Tower / The Monitor

The box does the actual work behind everything your computer does. The monitor is just the screen that displays it, like a car’s dashboard shows information from the engine without doing any of the work itself.

Picture a car. The engine, under the hood, does the actual work. The dashboard just displays information about what the engine is doing. Your computer box is the engine — it does the actual work. The monitor is the dashboard — it just shows you the result.

  1. The box, sometimes sitting under the desk, is called the tower or computer box. It’s where the actual work happens.
  2. The flat screen in front of you is the monitor. It only displays images — it isn’t doing any of the work itself.
  3. A cable (a wire that connects two things) links the two, so the box can display its work on the screen.
  4. On a laptop, both pieces are built into one case, but they’re still doing two separate jobs.

If the screen goes black but the box still hums with lights on, the box is probably fine. The screen or its cable is usually the actual problem.

There Are No Dumb Questions
If my screen turns off, is my computer broken?
Not necessarily. The box might still be running fine — only the screen or its cable needs a check.
Why do laptops look like only one piece?
Laptops combine the box and the monitor into one case to save space, but internally, they’re still doing two separate jobs.

Look under or beside your desk to find the box. Then look at the screen in front of you — that’s a separate piece doing a separate job.
